Meet Our Team – Steve Mulvey

Tell us a bit about yourself and your role at Immense?

Hi! My name is Steve, I’m the Product Designer at Immense. I’ve been a design professional for 13 years and worked a broad range of roles within design including, Graphic Design, Branding, Art Direction, Illustration and Photography. But it is my interest in people and their online behaviour that ultimately led me to focus on UI and UX.

What is a typical day like for you at Immense?

My day usually starts with fresh ground coffee before letting everyone know I’m online. I’ll catch up with slack messages and email and also review my calendar for the day. I also like to have my own Kanban board up in my office so I can keep a track of all my assigned and upcoming tasks.

If I’m designing, I use a combination of Sketch and Abstract to create and manage the design system then Zeplin for the design delivery. Sometimes I will start with pencil and paper, other times I’ll just jump straight in. When I’m stuck, I find picking up a guitar to jam a few bars helps.

How did you find out about Immense and become involved in the company?

After helping to develop E-commerce systems I was looking for an opportunity that has the potential to have a real, positive impact on people’s lives. I have gained a lot of valuable experience working for large E-comms organizations, which I’m grateful for. But the time was right for me to change and I haven’t looked back.

What’s the best part about working at Immense?

Now that we are a default remote-working company I get to spend more time with my wife and kids. Also my colleagues are all amazing at their jobs, which is great because I generally only have to worry about my tasks.

What would you say is the most challenging part of the job?

The hardest part of the job would be creating something completely new from scratch. While we can use UI theory to help select what the optimum input field should be for a component. What we need to find out is how to leverage and unlock the power of Immense through design to make simulations super easy and super relevant to a wider range of industries.

What has been your biggest career achievement?

So far, it would be creating the design system for Howdens Joinery. I came on board near the start of a company-wide digital transformation and helped them release 2 major iterations of their new E-comms website.

But as we launch the new platform, for me, this will be my new high point.

What did you want to be when you were younger?

I wanted to join the RAF like my Nan and Grandad. I would still love to earn a pilot’s licence in the future if I had the free time (and money!)

What do you think the future of mobility looks like?

It will look as multi-faceted as the people who need to travel. Post COVID there will be some challenges around sharing schemes, but ultimately there will be a demand for more travel options.

What do you think are the biggest challenges facing the industry I the current climate?

I think that the biggest challenges will be public health and environmental issues. COVID has shown us a glimpse of what a world with less noise and pollution could look like. People should not have to choose between mobility and health, we need both.

When you’re not working, what are your hobbies and interests?

When I’m not pushing pixels around a screen I love being outdoors. Running and Cycling are my two main passions and I also enjoy camping hiking and generally travelling both in the UK and abroad.

If you were stuck on a desert island and could take three things with you what would they be?

My old iPod, Sunglasses and a magical fridge that turns coconuts into ice cold beer.
