Meet Our Team – Timmy Yang

Timmy is Immense’s latest research intern and current office table tennis champion!

Tell us a bit about yourself and what do you do at Immense?

I am Timmy. I joined Immense as a Research Intern in the Engineering Department in August 2019. My role is to design and implement the data pipeline for the existing data and bring Machine Learning concepts into the validation of the simulation tool.

What was your background before you joined Immense?

I studied Computer Science in Fu Jen University in Taiwan and got my MSc in Computer Vision and Machine Learning Cranfield University. During my studies, I was always very passionate about new technology and wanted to get involved. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to join Immense and really get into a cutting-edge technology company.

What is a typical day like for you at Immense?

Always joyful in the morning, get ready to face and solve any problems or challenges with a cup of coffee. Every morning we have a stand-up meeting with the team. I then spend the day working on Python programming and dealing with the data pipeline and algorithms.

How did you find out about Immense and become involved in the company?

My course director at Cranfield University recommended me to Pau Segui the Senior Solutions Engineer at Immense. I then went for an interview and met the team and was lucky enough to get the role!

What is the best part about working at Immense?

The working environment in Immense is very harmonious, and colleagues are very friendly. Most of all, Immense is part of the future of transportation!

What would you say is the most challenging part of the job?

Sometimes I must do something that maybe no one has done before. It can be quite challenging but is also really exciting!

What is the best bit of career advice you have ever been given?

“To fail is normal, to succeed isn’t. Don’t be afraid of failure.” – Jack Ma. I have always been very ambitious since I was a child; I like to win and as a child I would often get very upset when I lost. This quote helped me to realise that even a great businessman experiences failure and that is normal. After seeing this quote and understanding it, I transferred my mindset to gain knowledge from failure and keep moving forward!

What has been your biggest academic or career achievement so far?

I got a first class in my master’s degree and I had two journal articles published.

What was that like getting your first and your first journals published?

The biggest advantage to getting a first is that I was then able to get the best opportunities after finishing my degree, for example being recommended by my course director due to my good grades helped me to get my role at Immense ! Also having my work published in a journal makes it feel like the hard work is finally paying off and has been accepted – the whole world will see my work!

What did you want to be when you were younger?

The man with most freedom and happiness.

What do you think the future of mobility looks like?

Everything will be 10 times faster from the daily commute right through to the shipment of goods.

What do you think are the biggest challenges facing the mobility industry?

Time. Everything is changing faster and faster. It’s a big challenge to catch up with all the state-of-the-art knowledge. But Immense is currently at the cutting-edge of the mobility industry already, the only thing to remember is ‘Never stop’!

When you’re not working what are your hobbies and interests?

I like to learn topics like global economy, investment or new technology. My other hobby is to clear my mind and relax when I am not working. I like to listen to podcasts in each of the areas in which I am interested, and I like to write notes when hearing something interesting.

If you were stuck on desert island and could take three things with you what would they be?

A helicopter with full fuel, a pilot, and a glass of champagne to enjoy the flight back home!
